What exactly is a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TV?
LCD’s are all around us.  This technology is utilized in digital clocks, microwave ovens, car dashboards, calculators, stereos, thermometers and other day-to-day electronic equipments used. The applications for liquid crystal displays are almost limitless, current day technology has enabled application in television set also.
What are "liquid crystals"?
They look like a liquid but have characteristics similar to crystal. To date, hundreds of thousands of liquid crystal-type substances, such as common soapsuds, have been found. At Sharp, we choose an appropriate match from these astronomical combinations to create a superior AQUOS range of LCD TVs by using our long- compiled data, as well as by conducting exhaustive computer simulations and experiments.
How does a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV operate?
Liquid crystal molecules in the LC display function like a camera shutter, allowing light to pass through or be blocked as voltage is applied so the LC molecules change their formation. The liquid crystal itself does not emit color or light.
Display principles are used in LCD?
One such arrangement in the illustration above is considered one unit (pixel) and the display is the collection of many pixels configured horizontally and parallel in lines. An LC display is thus a panel with many shutters aligned together. The LC-52G7M employs approx. 2,073,600 X 3 pixels covering the entire display.
Image Production Principles.
The light used to pass through the LCD is ambient light, including natural light as well as regular electric lamp light.
1. Transmissive-Type (LCD TV)
The light passing through the LCD is fluorescent light, which has the same wavelength as solar light.
2. Reflective-Type (LCD Calculator, LCD Watch)
Solar light is used for the light source.
3. Projection Type (LCD Projector)
A more powerful light source is used, such as UHP or metal halide lamps.
Drive system.
Driving a great number of pixels individually and simultaneously is based on two major methods:

1) Simple Matrix Drive System

The X electrodes are laid on the lower substrate of the liquid crystal cell, and the Y electrodes are laid on the upper substrate. Electrical signals are applied to the X and Y conductors with the proper timing to select the target pixels.

2) Active Matrix Drive System

In active matrix LCDs, switching transistors (TFTs) or diodes are attached to each pixel to turn it on or off. X and Y electrodes are formed on the same substrate as TFT (or diode) arrays. The switching signals are applied to the X electrodes. Video signals are then applied to the Y electrodes.
Color Generation Principles
Three colour filters representing the primary colors (R-red, G-green, B-blue), are applied to each pixel, and a variety of color combinations can thereby be expressed.
What is the life of an LCD TV?
The average lifespan of Backlight of LCD TV is 60,000 hours. With more normal viewing habits of, say, 8 hours per day, you can extend the lifespan of your TV by a decade or more (to about 20 years)!

What do you need to consider before you buy your LCD TV?
PICTURE CONSIDERATIONS:

1.Aspect ratio

The ratio of picture width to height. In NTSC and PAL video, the present standard is 4:3. In wide screen video, it is typically 16:9.

2.Resolution

The density of lines or dots that make up an image.  The higher the resolution, the more picture detail there is.  A measure of the ability of a camera or video system to reproduce detail, or the amount of detail that can be seen in an image.  A sharp, clear picture has high resolution.

Standards on display resolutions.

VGA: Video Graphics Array = 640 x RGB x 480 dots.
WVGA: Defines a class of VGA displays with a width resolution sufficient to create an aspect ratio of 16:9.
XGA: extended Graphics Array = 1,024 x RGB x 768 dots
WXGA / HD ready: Wide Graphics Array = 1,366 x RGB x 768 dots.
SXGA: Super extended Graphics Array = 1,280 x RGB x 1,024 dots.
HDTV/Full HD: Hi-definition TV = 1920 x RGB x 1080 dots.

Pixels: 1 Pixels = 3dots (1R, 1G, 1B)


3. Brightness = Luminance

The display brightness is the attribute of visual perception in accordance with which an area appears to emit more or less light. (Luminance is the recommended name for the photoelectric quantity, which has also been called brightness.) Its unit is Candela (cd/cm2), and the greater the luminance, the brighter the display is.

4. Contrast ratio

The difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest parts of images.When the luminance of the lightest part is 500 cd/m2 and the darkest part is  1 cd/m2, the contrast ratio of the screen is 500:1.
1) For Dynamic Contrast, the number (e.g. 3000:1) is not measured at the same time unlike Sharp's and most of other manufacturers‘ contrast ratio, which is measured in one condition (e.g. 800:1).

2) With the screen brightness automatically controlled by the TV, the chance of customers actually watching the "3000:1" ratio is nearly zero as the screen will not be in "condition B" level brightness unless there is a long pause scene of black.


3) “Dynamic contrast ratio" is a number which customers cannot see the effect or its advantage in ordinal TV viewing. The actual contrast it can make with white and black at the same time (Active/Native Contrast ratio) would not be as high as "3000:1”.

Viewing Angle

The characteristic that the way the screen looks (contrast or colors) depends on from which angle you see the screen. Compared to CRTs, LCDs has greater dependency on viewing angle (has poor viewing angle characteristic), so this characteristic becomes an issue. However, this characteristic of LCDs is improving these days and there are panels that have less dependency.


FUNCTIONAL CONSIDERATIONS


COMPUTER USE


LCD flat screens display static images from computer or any other sources extremely well, with full color detail, no flicker, and no screen burn-in. Moreover, the number of pixels per square inch on an LCD display is typically higher than other display technologies, so LCD monitors are especially good at displaying large amounts of data - like you would find on an Excel spreadsheet for example - with exceptional clarity and precision. For the same reasons, LCD TVs will also be a slightly better template for video gaming.


FAST-MOVING VIDEO PLAYBACK


While the "response time" of LCD TVs has markedly improved in the last few years, they still suffer from a slight "trailer" effect, where the individual pixels are just slightly out of step with the image on the screen. During fast moving sports scenes, the most discerning eyes can detect this slight motion response lag. ‘SHARP” has improved this performance by introducing high response time of less than 4m Seconds.


Installation Considerations


LCD technology affords consumers new options when it comes to the physical placement of their TV displays. LCD TV’S can be now installed at any location to match the décor, if you give a little thought to the matter beforehand. There are many dozen ways to install your new LCD TV, the most popular are mentioned below.


Flat Wall Mounts
allow you to maximize the space saving. This option is generally the least expensive, and it adds just less than two inches to the monitor's total depth. ‘SHARP’ supplies free wall mounting brackets for 32” to 42” LCD TV.

Tilt Wall Mounts
enable you to place your TV above eye level, keeping it out of the way though readily viewable from anywhere in the room.  This special mounting where the angle of the LCD TV can be varied are also available and are available at extra cost. Table Stands
are another popular way to display LCD units. “Sharp” models come fitted with table mounting stands.
What is the right distance for viewing LCD TV?
The right distance depends on the size of your TV:

For 20 to 27-inch displays, you should be able to watch comfortably from 3 to 5 feet away.
For 32 to 37-inch TVs, you should sit back 6 to 8 feet from the screen itself.
For 42 to 46-inch TVs, you'll need 10 to 14 feet between you and the screen.
For 52 to 65-inch LCD displays look best when viewed from 12 to 16 feet away.
How many years does LCD TV have warranty?
Normally, LCD TV has one-year warranty from the date of purchase of the product.  The terms and conditions of warranty are mentioned in the warranty card.  The warranty card is issued at the time of registration/installation or when asked for demonstration. For issue of warranty card branch service center needs copy of purchase bill issued by the dealer/retailer.

How to clean my LCD TV?
Unplug the AC cord from the AC outlet before cleaning the product. Use a damp cloth to clean the product. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners.
 
What are the important safety precautions for LCD TVs?
Water and moisture - Do not use the product near water, such as bathtub, washbasin, kitchen sink, laundry tub, swimming pool and in a wet basement.

Do not place vases or any other water-filled containers on this product. The water may spill onto the product causing fire or electric shock.


Stand - Do not place the product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod or table. Doing so can cause the product to fall, resulting in serious personal injuries as well as damage to the product. Use only a cart, stand, tripod, bracket or table recommended by the SHARP or sold with the product. When mounting the product on a wall, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use only the mounting hardware recommended by the SHARP.


When relocating the product placed on a cart, it must be moved with utmost care. Sudden stops, excessive force and uneven floor surface can cause the product to fall from the cart.


Ventilation - The vents and other openings in the cabinet are designed for ventilation. Do not cover or block these vents and openings since insufficient ventilation can cause overheating and/or shorten the life of the product. Do not place the product on a bed, sofa, rug or other similar surface, since they can block ventilation openings. This product is not designed for built-in installation; do not place the product in an enclosed place such as a bookcase or rack, unless proper ventilation is provided or the manufacturer’s instructions are followed.


The LCD panel used in this product is made of glass. Therefore, it can break when the product is struck forcefully or with a sharp object. If the LCD panel is broken, be careful not to be injured by broken glass.


Heat sources - Keep the product away from heat sources such as radiators, heaters, stoves and other heat-generating products (including amplifiers)


To prevent fire, never place any type of candle or naked flames on the top or near the TV set.


To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not place the AC power cord under the TV set or other heavy items.


Do not place heavy objects on this product or stand on it. Doing so could cause injury if the product overturns. Take special care near children and pets.


The LCD panel is a very high technology product with 6,220,800 thin film transistors, giving you fine picture details. Due to the very large number of pixels, occasionally a few non-active pixels may appear on the screen as a fixed point of blue, green or red. This is within product specifications and does not constitute a fault.


Do not display a still picture for a long time, as this could cause an afterimage to remain.


Install the product on the place where the AC cord can be unplugged easily from the AC outlet, or from the AC INPUT terminal on the rear of the product.


Precautions when transporting the TV b

What is the correct method of installation of my refrigerator?
Ensure adequate ventilation for your refrigerator, it is recommended to provide space of 6cm on both sides and at the back, and space of 9cm above the refrigerator.

Insufficient spacing will decrease the cooling efficiency, resulting in unnecessary consumption of electricity.

Using the front Adjustable feet, ensure that the refrigerator is positioned firmly and level on the floor.
How does the Plasmacluster Operation work?
The plasmacluster automatically starts operating when the refrigerator is powered on. You may cancel /start operation by pressing the button given.
How is the Plasmacluster Operation benefitial?
The ionizer inside your refrigerator releases clusters of ions, which are collective masses of positive and negative ions, into the freezer and refrigerator compartments. These ion clusters inactivate airborne mold fungus.

There may be slight odors in the refrigerator. This is the smell of ozone generated by the ionizer. The amount of ozone is minimal, and quickly decomposes in the refrigerator.
How do I store the food inside the refrigerator?
Place the food on the shelves to allow the cooling air to circulate efficiently. Hot foods should be cooled before storing. Storing hot foods increases the temperature in the unit and increases the risk of food spoilage. Do not block the outlet and inlet of  the cool air circulating circuit with foods or containers; otherwise the foods will not be evenly cooledthrough out the refrigerator.
Do not place food directly in front of cold air outlet. This may lead to the food freezing.
How do I clean interior & exterior of refrigerator?
Remove the shelves and pockets from the cabinet and door. Wash them in warm soapy dishwashing water; rinse in clean water and dry.
Clean the inside with a cloth soaked in warm water.
Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth each time it is soiled.
How do I get rid of an odor in my refrigerator?
Throw away any spoiled foods. This might seem like a given, but take a close look at the food in the fridge and be sure that it hasn't gone bad.
Clean the shelves. Hand wash the shelves with water. Do not place them in the dishwasher.
Be sure to wash the interior walls and the door liner. Using a clean sponge clean the entire interior of the refrigerator including the exteriors of the vent and the light. Wipe dry after you're finished and leave the door open for a bit to air dry.
Can I change the compartment lamp in case of failure?

Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifiers
What is a Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Generator?
Unlike air purification models that work by drawing microbes, dust and other airborne contaminants through a filtration system, the Plasmacluster Ion Generators generate positive and negative ions that attack airborne viruses and microbes in the air, rendering them inactive.

What are Plasmacluster Ions?
In general, cluster ions are ionized groups of atoms and molecules. Plasmacluster Ions consist of H+ and O2- ions surrounded by several water molecules, the same as the molecules that exist in the natural world.
How are Plasmacluster Ions generated?
By applying high voltage positive and negative charges to the plasma discharge electrodes, H+ ions of hydrogen and O2- ions of oxygen molecules are generated by breaking down and ionizing airborne water and oxygen molecules. The generated ions are surrounded by water molecules, creating Plasmacluster Ions. A Plasmacluster Ion generator consists of needle electrodes and a high voltage generating circuit combined in one package.

Is PCI technology affective against the new influenza (the swine flu) virus?
Yes, in the latest experiments, it was shown that Plasmacluster ions inhibit 99.9% of the new-type H1N1 influenza virus in stationary form (drops of the virus placed in a petri dish; concentration of 300,000 ions/cm3) in 2 hours and 95% of the virus in airborne form (inside a box with a volume of 1 m3; concentration of 25,000 ions/cm3) in 40 minutes.
Is it possible to prevent infection from flues and viruses using the Plasmacluster Generators?
PCI products are not medical equipment and therefore we do not claim that they will prevent infection. The test data shows the efficacy of the products and as such we are confident that the technology will help to reduce the risk of contamination through air borne viruses. We see these products as being a complimentary tool in the fight against infection in much the same way that you would use a Lifeboy soap. As with all these products, here will always be external factors that can not be controlled.
What about effectiveness against any new viruses?
"PCI's efficacy mechanism is based on OH radicals, which are generated by a combination of positive and negative ions on the virus surface. These extract hydrogen from spike-like proteins on the surface of the virus and create harmless H2O. This decomposes and inactivates the virus protein. Is there any adverse effects on humans when using PCI?
PCI decomposes surface material by generating OH radicals, which come from a combination of ions, If one ion attaches itself to a small particle like a virus (up to 0.1um in diameter), an ion of opposite polarity will also attach itself. The human body is much larger than a virus, so ions cannot combine on the surface. Therefore OH radicals will not work to human body. We also performed tests such as inhalation toxicity and eye and skin irritation/corrosion tests, that confirm the safety of this technology.
Three ways the infection is spread: by contact, by droplets and by air. Is PCI effective against all routes of infection?
Our products are specifically designed to tackle the spread of airborne viruses.
What is the ideal positioning of products in the room/area?
The ion density of the products have been measured by placing the product in the centre of the  room. As the ions generate from this into the air the further you get from the appliance the less dense the concentration - although it continues to permeate the room. We would suggest placing the product as near to the centre of the room if possible, or close to areas where the user / users are most likely to congregate.

How long should we leave the product on?
We would recommend leaving it on permanently, if this is not possible it is ok - it just takes some    time for the generator to infiltrate to space with the Plasmacluster Ions.
How many types of harmful substances has PCI shown to be effective against in studies by third- party organizations?
Eleven third-party organizations have verified the effectiveness of PCI against a total of 27 harmful   substances.
What are Plasmacluster Ions effective against?
The effect of Plasmacluster Ions on airborne viruses, allergens such as faeces and dead mites, and fungi has been verified by third-party organizations. Plasmacluster Ions have no immediate effect on chemicals, but it has been confirmed that impregnated odours from things like cigarettes and sweat can be removed by PCI.
Do Plasmacluster Ions work on any bacteria or viruses?
Plasmacluster ions should work on any of these as long as they have protein on the surface. The effects on influenza viruses, feline corona virus, E. coli, and staphylococcal have been confirmed.

What happens to bacteria or viruses after they have been inactivated?
Inactivated bacteria and viruses change into tiny particles.

Are the products effective against allergens?
Yes, the technology is proven to inactivate suspended allergens such as dust mite faeces and dead dust mites which carry the contaminants that cause asthma. In the same way as on the viruses the Plasmacluster attacks these contaminants removing the harmful proteins and rendering them inactive.

What about mould?
Plasmacluster cut through and remove the cell membrane proteins on suspended mould surface, inhibiting their effect, as a result it is effective at reducing the growth of mould on surfaces, which can cause respiratory problems.
